1. Explanation

After installing Linux, you might have experienced FPS drops, especially if you are on a Laptop with a TDP greater than 15 Watts. But this was never the case in Windows.

This happens due to the internal thermal design limitations that should be only valid for the CPU with 15 Watts of TDP, but instead is levied on every CPU, so the operating system thinks that the CPU is drawing more power than the design capability, which can harm it, so as a protection measure, throttles it to the bare minimum core clock. Thus, the throttling after some time. This experience is only affecting heavy workload applications only as otherwise the CPU stays under 15 Watts.

To fix this issue, the thermal design power can be set using a fix by a developer named erpalma, who developed a script to force the custom values set by the user to let the CPU run at higher TDP than the operating system thinks is best for it. Thus, the CPU is never throttled down by the operating system and results in no FPS drops over the period.

2. Solution

If you are facing such an issue, you can follow the guide here to resolve this issue, but please be aware that this fix only works for Intel CPUs.
